Crop Over Carnival in Barbados
2010 Crop Over Carnival
Crop Over, a five-week summer festival, is Barbados' most popular and colourful festival. It's origins can be traced back to the 1780's, a time when Barbados was the world's largest producer of sugar. At the end of the sugar season, there was always a huge celebration to mark the culmination of another successful sugar cane harvest - the Crop Over celebration.
If you have never experienced Grand Kadooment Day, then you've been missing out on one of life's great treasures. A summer street carnival, filled with people consumed with "festival fever", dancing to Caribbean soca music and wearing spectacular, multicolored costumes and body paint. It's the climax of the Crop Over festival - "sweet fuh days" - in Barbados.
24 July, Junior Kadooment and the Junior Monarch finals from 9am to 1pm at the National Stadium the event is being combined for the first time. Pic-O-De-Crop Semi-Finals from 2pm at the National Stadium.
25 July, Soca Royale Party Monarch & Sweet Soca finals from 12pm, at Bushy Park, St Philip.
30 July, Pic-O-De-Crop, Calypso Monarch finals from 7pm at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown.
30 July- 01 August, Bridgetown Market daily from 9am-10pm, Spring Garden Highway.
31 July, Foreday Morning Jump-Up from 2am, from Carlisle Car Park heliport to Spring Garden Highway followed by a Sunrise Beach Party. Then a Float Parade from 4pm at Spring Garden Highway plus the Crop Over Steel Band Finals from 7pm -tba.
01 Aug, Cohobblopot from 8pm at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown.
Cohobblopot:
The Kings and queens of the year's costume bands are given an opportunity to show off their dazzling and elaborate costumes, to the sounds of the latest local calypso hits, while competing for prizes and the titles of King and Queen of the Festival.
02 Aug, Grand Kadooment Day from 9am starting from Warrens then to the National Stadium and ending at the Spring Garden Highway.
Should you wish to join in Kadooment Day , there are several costumed bands to choose from, and membership is not restricted to locals. Costumes range from very conservative whole piece ones to bikini-like ones. If you plan to "jump", you should wear sneakers already broken in, use adequate amounts of sun-block, and keep yourself well hydrated. Rain often blesses the "Jump Up" and are welcomed as the summer sun can be challenging.
